A story about the specifics of life in the "capital" of the General Government, the mutual relations between the occupiers and the occupied, the totalitarian Nazi ideology, and of the occupying terror and tragedy of the war.
The book also talks about trying to cope with the reality of war and different attitudes towards it, forms of resistance and conspiracy, and finally, about the Holocaust of the Jews of Kraków and the actions taken by the Poles for their rescue. It is also a story about particular residents of the city, whose reports, memoirs, biographies are presented at the permanent exhibition “Kraków - Nazi Occupation 1939-1945”, opened in June 2010 in Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory in the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków. The publication is a supplement to the issues discussed at the exhibition. The book presents a wide range of iconographic material, exhibits and documents from the period of the war. Publication of the obvious reasons is not exhaustive, just like the exhibition itself, the issue of the history of occupied Kraków – it is a kind of authorial comment made by the authors of the exhibition as well as a guide to the topic. In addition to the texts prepared by the authors of the exhibition there are also articles published by persons from the Program Council: Lili Haber, president of the Kraków Federation in Israel, and prof. Andrzej Chwalba, Chairman of the Program Council. The book is richly illustrated - includes more than 800 photographs, many of which are still little known. The chapters of the publication correspond to the arrangement of thematic exhibitions and are preceded by photographs of the exhibition pieces. The book is very popular among readers. |
