Le pilote Jacques Struelens (1925-2006) a trouvé ces photos abandonnées (oubliées ?) dans un avion de la RAF dans lequel il transportait des soldats américains.
Jacques Struelens a ensuite travaillé à la Sabena.
Il les a donné à sa mort Mr Charles Rohonyi alors secrétaire communal de Waterloo.

En 1964, Saul Friedländer livrait au public français le fruit de ses recherches dans les archives du IIIe Reich concernant les relations entre le Vatican et l’Allemagne nationale-socialiste. Complétés de textes issus d’archives américaines et israéliennes, ces documents jetaient un éclairage nouveau sur des sujets brûlants : l’attitude du souverain pontife à l’égard de la question polonaise, de la défaite de la France, de l’attaque allemande contre l’Union soviétique, de l’entrée en guerre des États-Unis ; et face aux crimes nazis, notamment l’extermination des Juifs.
À sa parution, Pie XII et le IIIe Reich suscita une avalanche de réactions passionnées et contradictoires, puis il s’imposa comme un livre de référence. Près d’un demi-siècle plus tard, alors que le Vatican a engagé la procédure qui devrait aboutir à la béatification et à la canonisation de Pie XII, Saul Friedländer réinterprète ce matériel ancien à la lumière des données nouvelles.
Saul Friedländer est Professeur d’histoire à l’université de Californie (UCLA). Il est l’un des plus grands spécialistes du nazisme et du génocide des Juifs, sujet auquel il a consacré de nombreux livres. Il a obtenu le Prix de la paix des libraires allemands en 2007 et le prix Pulitzer en 2008.
